murder trial. new overnight, and suv crash shuts down part of a heavily traveled raleigh road. we kick off the work week with unseasonably warm weather but how long will that last? happy monday, everyone, thank you for joining us. i'm renee chou. >> i'm bill leslie. we begin with breaking news out of cleveland county west of charlotte where a couple died after a crash in a house explosion. >> it happened around 10:30 last night, it happened around then triggering explosions at their home. at least two people killed, fire crews are on the scene cleaning up debris and making sure the gas is turned on. two decades after a shaw university student is murder, a jury could start deliberating against the man accused of killing her. >> investigators charged chris

mcqueen. wral's julia sims joins us outside the justice center. >> reporter: jurors announced it would not present any evidence leaving them to consider results of a new dna test as well as testimony from witnesses about things they recall from 20 years ago. jurors heard from friends of lacoy mcqueen who even now some 20 years later broke down on the stand, when talking about the shaw university student. they testified lacoy mcqueen had been pregnant, and her boyfriend, chris lawing, and nc state student at the time wanted her to have an abortion. witnesses told jurors the couple argued and when mcqueen went to meet him at the bell tower she disappeared. her remains were found later in vance county. police arrested lawing in 1997 but lack of evidence force them to drop those charges. jurors heard about new dna tests not available at the time that prosecutors say linking to

suggested the lead investigator was an overzealous cop who ignored and neglected to look at any other suspects. so again, closing arguments are expected this morning and the jury could get this case for deliberations this afternoon. >> julia sims live in downtown raleigh, thank you very much. overnight, a crash in raleigh shut down part of northfield road near the daily road intersection. and suv knocked out a utility pole crashing into our yard. there are no serious injuries. duke energy crews worked to replace the pole, north neville brody is back open. a quick moving fire took out three buildings in sanford. it started at the corner of bragg and matthew streets in robert's cabinet shop and spread into an attached building, then a third history -- third freestanding structure. the damage was so bad investigators may never know the exact source of the fire.

they put on it the fire would not go out and then it got that bad. >> a small church was also affected, no one was hurt. one person is in the hospital after a fire in downtown raleigh. someone called firefighters to the scene of carter street after 8:00 last night. it is unclear if the person taken away had serious injuries. no word on the cause. we are going to have beautiful weather in-store today, kind of keeping the weekend stuff going. >> sunday was outstanding >> it was so pretty. we started out cold on sunday morning but had temperatures warm up nicely through the day. it's not as cold this morning. were married in place. a pretty sunrise. the skies are completely clear over rdu. and, we had a plane taking off. 49 in durham, 49 holly springs,

margin to customers. duke is accused of overstating future electricity needs in the north carolina mountains in order to have the plan approved. a los angeles judge is scheduled to consider whether to dismiss one of the defamation lawsuits against bill cosby. his attorneys want janice dickinson's case to be dismissed because they say she has given differing accounts of interactions with cosby over the years. the model and tv host suit cosby in may after he denied her claims that he drugged and raped her in lake tahoe in 1982. she said she tried to include the story in 2002 memoir but her publisher refused. more information is coming out about what the michigan government knew about issues in the water in the city of flint. what newly released emails reveal about when the governor say they issued a red flag. plus today only comes around once every 40 years.

to our weather today? >> it's a little bit colder but they are still seeing orbital frame from the cold front come through and we are going to miss it here. we actually have a cold front that comes through today but you'll never know it. that's the kind of cold front we like. we do not care for that one last wednesday. this wednesday we have a chance for some rain, at this point it does not look like a severe weather threat but it does look what i can wednesday, at least in the morning. let's look at what's happening, it sure is pretty. there is our roxboro skycam. you can see bright sunshine and the breeze blowing the flags around on the courthouse lawn. wind is 15 miles per hour so it's a little bit breezy out there this morning. that will continue to the afternoon but the wind at this point is out of the southwest, and that is making for a nice miles morning. 49 is our temperature, that window southwest right now at

dewpoint is 33, humidity 54%. it's nice and dry as you can tell without sunshine. 48 in roxboro, 50 s. hill, 48 in rocky mount, 52 tarboro. heading south, 48 southern pines, 49 in fayetteville. we do have some big changes coming this week, today and tomorrow will be beautiful with temperatures close to 70 and lots of sunshine. very little chance of rain delay to say we have a front that approaches which may bring us rain for midnight. and into wednesday morning we will start the commute of it wet. talking probably a quarter of an inch, not a big heavy rain but there may be a few rumbles of thunder. thursday we get a break with a little sunshine but that front that comes to bring us rain wednesday will also bring us colder temperatures. i will show you that coming up in the 7-day forecast. friday we have a chance of rain, possibly wet snow from the triangle area northward as we have much cold air coming in again with another front. it's drying out and sunny, certainly beautiful out there

out a little bit, there is our friend, and the rain coming across the mountains which is rapidly weakening. we will see this rain fizzle out, it does not make it here. instead we have sunshine and mild conditions. and on the backside of that front, miles as well. another high pressure system with the source down in the south. miles ahead in behind the front, again, you will not notice that much. we jump ahead to tuesday, and watch our cause increasing. it stays nice and bright through the middle of the day tomorrow but then we begin to see rain again. coetzee sprinkled by the evening commute ahead of the front that at 5:00 that front is still back into tennessee. into early wednesday, futurecast has it passed us by 7:00 a.m. that may be a little bit fast. we have a chance of seeing rain during the morning commute in the clear out in the afternoon. and that front now, we are dealing with colder air. take a look at that on the 7-day

for reference, the normal high temperature this time of year is upper 50s to about 60. by friday we see the normal high temperature up to 60 degrees. it is that time of year where things are warming up nicely. 69 today and tomorrow, 56 wednesday. dropping back down to breezing in the morning thursday. friday we have raymond comes through again. some of that may be in the form of wet snow from the triangle area northward and over the weekend, temperatures fully recover. pretty chilly saturday but this coming saturday will be much like this past saturday. warming up with sunshine and high near 60. brian is here taking a look at some slower traffic on i-40. >> typical congestion delays building in the cleveland community heading up into corner this morning. this camera shows us that slowing traffic on 40 westbound with the delay cell building round highway 42, slow all the

up to 60 minutes from that trip from 42 up to 440. the good news is heading beyond that, not really picking up any fortify related delays, maybe just a slowdown were 440 eastbound traffic delays approaching brockway road. also looks like it is maybe getting a little bit busier on wheeler road interchange. as soon as you get beyond that toward rtp, traffic moving along pretty well. traffic looks good on the north side of raleigh, clear into rtp at this point did we have a stalled vehicle on a residential street in gardner. that's not causing any problems at this moment at least. let's take a look at life drive times leaving orange county from 85 to 15-500 or one from 85 to 15-500 or 1/9 minute trip. if you cut out at 15-501, atlanta downtown, that trip

as we see a little bit of a delay building in some spots pedometer northbound spot, leaving hillsboro away from the i-40 march out to the durham freeway, that right starts at eight minutes. back to you. the third time was not the charm for the spacex new mission, the company called off the launch of its docket 9 rocket in florida after two similar cancellations in days. on the website, spacex says the rocket and pay vote are fine. the ceo, elon musk, tweeted, rising temps do tend to trigger an alarm, the rocket is carrying a phone satellite that will bring phone access to millions. michigan governor knew there was something wrong with the flint water as far back as 2014 according to newly released emails from his top aides. this show the aides discussed switching the water supply back from the flint river to lake huron.

months after flint started its own desk using its own river for drinking water. researchers found elevated levels of lead that can cause neurological problems in children. investigators are looking into the issue in response to the emails, snyder's spokesman says those were preliminary concerns before aides actually knew of that problems. official charges are expected to be announced today in the deadly shooting of a pastor in dayton, ohio. 70-year-old william schooler was shot inside his office at st. peter's missionary baptist. his own brother, daniel schooler, is accused of pulling the trigger. he's in custody facing murder charges. no word on a motive. community leaders gather to remember the victims of a deadly shooting spree in kansas. police say three people were killed in 40s -- 14 others wounded during the rampage in newton and hesston. most were shot at the excel

cooler temperatures wednesday to the end of e week and really into the weekend. take a look at the temperatures this morning, nice and miles. 48 in rocky mount and intrinsics. 49 in fayetteville, 50 degrees in southfield. our hi isafternoon near 70. same story again tomorrow. wednesday, 56 and chance of showers. 7:27. we have an accident on u.s.-1 northbound before lnut street. the right wing is blocked in their backups toward cary in raleigh. that trip now up to eight minutes. consider using walnut street as an alternate route if you can get there. pickup u.s.-1 from walnut street and it should be in good shape. something we will follow as we continue coverage through the morning. as we take a look at the live commute map, westbound i-40 looks good but on the eastbound side a report of an accident. right at him and wrote. keep that in mind.

raleigh's police department is going to be closer to the possibility of police one body cameras. >> this afternoon, staff will present an overview of the new tool to city council. wral's mikaya thurmond joins us live in downtown raleigh,

has been a public discussion about this. >> reporter: that's right. today's session is about getting councilmember feedback on the body camera initiative. the raleigh police chief as well as her staff will present an overview about potential benefits of employing cameras as well as concerns. today's presentation will also address different technological approaches and resources. this discussion comes on the heels of several very public police shootings where the actions of both the officer and the suspect were called into question. any implementation here in raleigh could take months to approve, and even longer to put into action. similar police body camera policies have been put in place in both durham and in fayetteville. this meeting is set to start at 1:00 p.m. >> mikaya thurmond reporting live in raleigh. the search for the next police chief in durham moves ahead this week. so far the process is on schedule. a list of 42 candidates is down to six. next steps come today and tomorrow when competitors take part in a two-day assessment. that will provide more insight into the management decision- making and interpersonal

finalists will meet with the durham police department staff in public in late march. city leaders would like to have the new person on board in may. garner has one of the busiest fire departments in wake county but it's firefighters are among the lowest paid. the county's fire commission plans to address a salary gap at the meeting this week. a recent study showed the firefighters are paid about 14% less than those at other departments in wake county. garner fire officials say their cause increased from 2% to 5% every year. they say it's challenging to hire and retain firefighters higher salaries. north carolinians will soon see a change in what we pay for certain services beginning tomorrow. the state will raise fees on various items and charge sales tax is on services that were previously not tax. dmv, division of motor vehicles. the sales tax rate will not

chart sales tax and services such as repair, maintenance, and installation. that includes installation on big appliances, or auto repairs. as for fees, the state budget raises fees for a number of services within the state government agencies. for example, a standard eight your drivers license fee will go from $32-$40. the new service taxes are expected to raise nearly 160 millions in the first full year it is in effect. several public hearings are monument on state capitol it will commemorate the americans. public hearings are scheduled the first two sessions are in lullaby hearings in rocky mount and fayetteville. the families of more than 160 paratroopers welcomed them home to fort bragg today, just as the group did 10 days ago, paratroopers assigned to the 82nd mission headquarters will

up, southwest in swing that 10 to 15 miles per hour. near 70 this afternoon and breezy but a mild breeze. tomorrow more of the same. then we switched gears to wetter and cooler condition starting wednesday. i will tell you what that means coming up in a few minutes. brian is here taking a look at -- oh, that looks like a big backup. some of you have a growing problem hettinger cary at u.s.- 1 northbound. it's 7:34. we had an earlier accident blocking right lanes on u.s.-1 walnut street. you can see there are still emergency vehicles on the way. we are hearing it's not a serious accident in terms of injuries but there is apparently a fluid cleanup there in one of those lanes leading to those lane closures and these growing backups on u.s.-1 northbound. taking a look at the latest

desk apex at highway 55 heading to 40 in raleigh. consider using gorman street, from their pickup i-40 or u.s.- 1 northbound, just avoid that stretch at us 1 northbound between the 55 exit all the way up toward walnut street this morning. you can see that redline showing up on the sensor readings. elsewhere in the triangle, looks good in major routes, slowing down in spots on five from the 40 westbound but so far not a bachelor from the capital boulevard area toward i- 40. leaving south durham and chapel hill heading into rtp, starting to see a delay on 40 eastbound around 7:51 between there and i was 55. it could be a sudden glare delay starting to build. both directions of the durham freeway looking fine, as we zoom into south raleigh we have a report of an accident on 40 eastbound around him and wrote. doesn't look like it's causing problems but we are seeing heavy westbound delays

also in garner a report of an accident at 70 business. a cary woman is safe after being stuck in a storm drain. the 58-year-old woman crawled into the drain on conroy court trying to save the cat but got trapped 150 feet in. emergency crews were able to rescue her, but the cat was never found. dramatic video of a car fire sent plumes of smoke into hill. eastbound i-40 at about 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday. the right lane was closed until the fire was put out. it is unclear what ignited the fire or if anyone was hurt. we have information about a driver charged in the deadly crash and fayetteville. bruce guzman faces charges including dwi and reckless driving. he was traveling on the strickland bridge road quarter- century circle when he lost control of the car and struck a tree. the passenger, 23-year-old,

temperatures are going to be much cooler. we have another system that rolls through friday. wednesday morning and friday are the days that we end up in the forecast. i will show you more about wednesday coming up. we have a band of rain coming into virginia from the mountains of west virginia, but all of this rain is dissipating quickly and not likely to hold together much further. we do see this little band here but while it makes its way to the viewing area it should be out of here bumping this high pressure system. even though the front room for we are pretty dry right now, not much chance of passing rain. on the other side of the front it's nice and mouth with another high pressure system. tuesday will end up in a nice system come here we start at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. later in the afternoon we start to cloud up a little bit, there could be a few sprinkles on the time of the evening commute. but then the front comes to bring us better chance of rain friday night into early wednesday. we clear out wednesday afternoon. the second half of wednesday afternoon should be fairly
